6 Reasons People Are Never Satisfied With What They Have

Reasons People Are Never Satisfied
The local radio station I was tuned into this morning had a short discussion about the reasons people are never satisfied. It went on to reveal that a study has found that the richest people on earth are the most unhappiest!

You and I may not fall into the richest people on earth (ahem..), but still, would you consider yourself satisfied with what you have?

Have you ever wondered why even after you bought some items you have always wanted, soon after you find yourself wanting something else?
Think tank: why are we never satisfied with what we have?

Here are some thoughts from the radio show, along with my own musings....

#1. We are not meant to be satisfied on earth!

Sounds funny don't you think? Or perhaps, a pessimistic comment. I doubt that personal development gurus will agree with this one. Leave a comment, I'd like to know what you think.

#2. Something Out There Is Better Than What We Have

Jim Collins (famous business author), in his newest title, How The Mighty Fall: And Why Some Companies Never Give In, terms this as "The Undisciplined Pursuit of More"

Even if the current condition keeps on improving, the desire to have more continue to grow. Therefore, in order to feel satisfied we got to have everything we currently missing, to the point that there is nothing we can want anymore. Hm.. mathematically possible :-) But is it realistic?

#3. If we can remain satisfied, we would never be motivated to do anything!

I tend to partly agree with this one. If you look at innovations in the past, you'll find a back story where someone was not satisfied with something! I think that the desire for more is what keeps us moving forward. We all need something to strive for. This may not necessarily be monetary; it can be more knowledge, better health, etc.

So basically, if you were truly satisfied with something, its unlikely that you would be motivated to do more?

#4. We are not appreciative of what we already have

What you have right now, could be what someone else may want. (in a literal sense) For example, you may have a loving family etc and there may be someone out that who would think that that's their ideal happiness.

#5. We have high expectations

Sometime ago I wrote a post on, Expectations: Is It A Human Weakness?
It generate some interesting discussions via comments.

We will always have expectations. It is the prediction of the (often uncertain) future based on what we know and the passed, in order to make ourselves feel more certain in the face of the unknown.
Be clear about what you want, what you expect, the outcome, expect the best, but then know that what ever happens it is always for the best and if it does not work out how we expect at the time, there is a bigger plan in place that we may not yet be able to see that is greater then the picture in our minds.

#6. We are not satisfied because we rarely follow our hearts

It seemed that lot of people tend to take decisions surrounding monitory gains. We don’t stop to do the things we were meant to do, because those things usually don’t produce the amount of money we'd like.

Let's discuss.. what are your thoughts?

I don’t know about “not meant to be satisfied”, but the world doesn’t make it an easy task. There are too many temptations. It takes a strong will to be happy with what you have.

I agree that a certain amount of dissatisfaction is necessary to keep us motivated. The important thing to remember is NOT to achieve your satisfaction at the expense of others. Sadly, from what we see around in this world, that is somewhat rare. Ok, maybe that is a pessimistic view of humans, but there it is.

I’m talking here about monetary or materialistic satisfaction. Today, the world is too focused on money and materialistic wealth, from which stems out most of the other problems in the world.

“So basically, if you were truly satisfied with something, its unlikely that you would be motivated to do more?”
No, you could always find something else to do.

This is my humble opinion. I just came across your blog and I really enjoyed reading some of your articles.

Sometimes people really do have a goals in life, that's why I think they keep on pushing hard on what they are doing, because they are thinking that, that will be their way to reach their goal. But not all of the people, coz some are just living simple with their lives, their contented that they are with their families. It's only my thought about it.

It is through suffering that our soul learns and becomes perfected. Suffering has a noble purpose, the evolution of our soul. Our struggles are merely disguised opportunities to grow. Through adversity we are introduced to our true selves, not only our weaknesses, but also our strengths.

"We are not meant to be satisfied on earth!"

This strong sentence may sound true to others who have strong desires to earthly things and unlimited success. The key to get yourself satisfied is to aim for specific goals, take action to achieve them and cherish those moment.

Sometimes, people overlooked the tiniest things on earth which makes them special. If we learn to appreciate them, you'll find a piece of heaven which is not comparable than anything else.

Satisfaction only comes from giving. Satisfaction is a feeling. Feelings are emotions. Emotions are energy, not objects. They can not be bought, sold, or traded. Acceptance and understanding is what the world seeks. It is impossible to find up a world of "one". Give to "give alone", and, not to get. Try it. I guarantee, total satisfaction!!!

Because humans have become greedier, with each generation, which in turn, has companies making more&different things...which people then become greedy to get. Especially this decade,IMO&it's not just about material things, that I speak of. We seem to demand more power, more liberties(as in taking liberties with stuff, people&situations),more technology(most of which is useless&making people dull, lazy&unwilling to interact with people IN PERSON),just more, more, more of everything. And a lot of what we want,is not stuff we actually need, but we have been told that we need it,or MUST have it,to be popular/fit in/our lives would be SO much better with said stuff. So,part of it for the past 60 years or so,anyway, IMO is media of those times&peoples weird thing about needing validation&approval from others, rather than themselves. Just a thought. Believe me,I do understand the desire for a satisfying, satisfied life, but some people take things too far,get spoiled(especially in the past 20 years or so,due to all the new gadgets&so many other 'bright, new, unneeded shiny toys') and not just won't,but can't appreciate anything they have. And they still want more. Me personally...sure,I'd change a few things about my life situation&circumstances&I do want a few certain things I don't currently have(one of which,is a time machine. (; ),but for the most part,I'm happy&pretty well satisfied with what I have in life. If I can get the few things I truly want(Well, aside from the time machine that will never be created for me TO get. LOL),that would be wonderful, but if I don't,I can still be just fine,as is. I am not rich financially(not in poverty, either),but I AM rich in happiness&peace within myself&IMO that is what matters. And no,I'm not one of those religious nuts, who thinks everyone should abstain from money&lifes pleasures. I'm just an average, but unique&happy female human. (:

"We are not meant to be satisfied on Earth"

There is no evidence to suggest there anything but our existence in this universe. If you would like to make a meta physical claim you'll need to provide evidence for that claim. Otherwise, I can make any arbitrary meta physical claim that I like without any evidence. I could argue that this universe is our eternal punishment for some other existence that we are currently unaware of.

See the problem? You can make this meta physical claims all day long and we can come up with an infinite amount of them. They all appear to be an invention of the mind, specifically the pre-frontal cortex.

I would love to see some actual proof to the contrary though.
